One of my friends proposed the theory that many religious people avoid responsibility in problem-solving by turning to God or any divine power for their answers.

To an extent, I do believe this is true; that there persists a deferral of personal responsibility and command to a “higher power” as a sort of quasi-faith (i.e. “I will believe in a given God as long as things turn out well for me and I don’t have to make much of an effort or think for myself”). You may call this cynical, and perhaps it is, but it does seem to me that the vast majority of us would rather do or be told what to do than think and do.
